This is special!!
This is Roy Nockolds original work! It is a trackside sketch of the 1929 1st Monaco Grand Prix depicting Grover Williams in the winning Bugatti 35b at Station hairpin, Marcel Lehoux can be seen in 3rd position in the Type 35c- we cannot be sure of the 2nd place car as Nockolds has designated it as No.52???
Nockolds was famous for his trackside sketches as was often seen at motor races with a plywood board around his neck sketching - often in fairly precarious positions! This would then have been worked up in the studio into a finished artwork. Although Nockolds completed many works from Monaco we haven't seen this particular work ever as completed item so it is unique! It is signed in pencil by Nockolds.
This work is on tracing paper (a commonly used paper for outdoor sketches) with a centre fold signifying that this is 'straight from the pad'.
It is extremely rare and important and we are priviledged to have it here in the gallery! We have undertaken a full refreshment on this work and it is double mounted in conservation mounts and framed ready to hang! The finished dimensions are 630mm wide by 500mm high. This is probably one of the more importnat Nockolds works not in a museum and we invite enquiries from museums for this one!
