What an iconic image! This is a very well known Nockolds picture of Mike Hawthorn in the Ferrari in the Morrocan GP of 1958 - They say every picture tells a story - this one shouts!
Shell were a sponsor of Mike Hawthorn and the Ferrari team and when it looked as if Mike was in with a very good shout of winning the World Championship they commisioned Roy Nockolds to fly to Morroco and produce a picture of the event - This is the Shell commisioned picture. The original was given to Mike Hawthorn and is well documented in his autobiographical book 'Champion Year' with a photograph of this image.
Shell then produced a limited edition of the original and presented them to their top franchised dealers as commemoration of their involvement in the World Championship - the one offered here at The Mabileau is one of these. It is in it's original frame as produced by Shell and has the original 'non-reflective' glass so we can say that it has been untouched since the Shell rep presented it to his key account!
There is a small amount of damp damage to the bottom left hand corner, but this doesn't detract from the image and we have left it alone for the sake of originality- sometimes the 'patina'is part of the story! It displays very well and is an important piece of British motor racing history it measures 820mm wide x 550mm high.
